Teen Enrichment Summer Camp

Teen Enrichment Summer Camp

In 2003, Executive Director Julianne Leavy developed the Teen Enrichment Summer Camp, a collaboration with The Big Sur Land Trust. The camp focuses on helping ethnically diverse, teenage girls envision the possibilities and opportunities that they can experience in their lives. They are encouraged to look at the importance of the choices they make today, and how those choices will affect their futures.

Throughout the week, the girls learn about the natural environment, land conservation and preservation. They participate in drama, hiking, swimming, art projects, riding and caring for horses, wood cutting, fire building, group therapy, healthy meal preparation, and personal journaling. The girls develop a special bond that can only be experienced by spending a week together. The staff that teaches, counsels, supervises, and shares time with the girls includes an environmental education specialist, therapists, and camp counselors. The on-site caretaker plays a significant role in the girls’ camp experience by teaching them special skills such as cutting wood, building fences and caring for horses.
