Understanding Children's Behavior
The primary objective of Chapter Two is to address the effects of domestic violence on children. In addition, the chapter tries to portray a sense of the enormity of the victim's burden—having to simultaneously deal with both the abuse against her and address the effects on her children.
The Vice Principal calls... Brandon has been sent to the office for fighting... When Sheila arrives at the school she's very nervous. She has a black eye and a makeshift sling on her arm. "What will they think? What excuse can I make up this time?"...
Abusive situations lead to a range of possible feelings in children such as fear, helplessness, anger, guilt, worry, and fear of losing a parent, and these feelings are usually exhibited through a child's behavior... children learn about how to express and deal with all of their feelings by the example of their parents... The way in which Brandon deals with his feelings is a reflection of the example his father sets for him...
This chapter covers a great deal of material. Some of the other issues covered are the different reactions based on gender and age, effects of direct physical and sexual abuse against children, and effects of exposure to inappropriate sexual behavior or pornographic material.
